Review, Dolly Parton: Backwoods Barbie

Dolly Parton: Backwoods Barbie.

Dolly’s image tends to hide the fact that she’s actually an amazing singer and songwriter. This is her first straight country album for a few years although she put out some excellent bluegrass/acoustic work in that time. She’s written most of the material, including the best tracks. She is in excellent vocie, and she and co-producer Kent Wells have overseen some excellent playing. But what really matters, as always, is the songs:
Better Get To Livin’: OK but unremarkable, 7/10
Made Of Stone: ditto, 7/10
Drives Me Crazy: boring pop song (one of the outside songs), 5/10
Backwoods Barbie: I expected to hate this song, but it was actually extremely good, a classic tune and a wry self-aware lyric, 9/10
Jesus & Gravity: a little hackneyed, but not bad (another outside song), and she sings it great, 7/10
Only Dreamin’, nice song with a Celtic feel, 7/10
The Tracks Of My Tears: nice but who really needs another version of this song?, 7/10
The Lonesomes, good song, 7/10
Cologne: good cheating song but it gets a bit samey and doesn’t end up going anywhere, 7/10
Shinola: good uptempo kissoff, 7.5/10
I Will Forever Hate Roses: touching song, 7/10
Somebody’s Everything: good, 7/10

Review: George Strait, Troubadour

George Strait’s latest record, Troubadour, finds him in excellent voice. It doesn’t reach the absolute highlights he’s capable of, and it’s not quite as good as 2006’s The Road Less Travelled, but there are some fine moments nonetheless, and overall it’s well up to standard.

Troubadour: tasteful but not that interesting, 7/10
It Was Me: lovely waltz, may not break any new ground, and the tune sounds very familiar to me. The Chair, maybe? 8/10
Brothers Of The Highway: pretty good trucking song, 7.5/10
River Of Love: pretty enjoyable little chugalong thing, 7/10
House Of Cash: fabulous song (written by Leslie Satcher and Monty Holmes) about the burning down of the home of Johnny Cash and June Carter, sung as a duet with the always great Patty Loveless. I love both the song and the performances, 8.5/10
I Saw God Today: OK. Well meaning but I’ve heard far better songs on the theme. 7/10.
Give Me More Time: quite touching, but again, not the best song I’ve heard on the theme, 7/10
When You’re In Love: charming. 7.5/10
Make Her Fall In Love With me Song: pleasant, 7/10
West Texas Town: nice relaxed piece of western swing enlivened by being performed as a duet with Dean Dillon, 7.5/10
House With No Doors: Fabulous, slightly quirky song. Loved it, 9/10
If Heartaches were Horses: another lovely song, 9/10

Review: Alan Jackson, Good Times

Alan Jackson's new CD Good Times is the first where he's written all the songs solo. It’s, well, very much what one expects from an Alan Jackson record. There are 17 tracks, which seems like slight overkill. I like Alan, but his songs are not all always great. There are definitely too many formulaic numbers here. He sounds good throughout – actually more like Don Williams than ever before.
Good Time: OK, a little formulaic. 6/10
Small Town Southern Man: quite touching tribute. 7/10
I Wish I Could Back Up. Good wistful song of regret. Liked this a lot. 8/10
Country Boy: more formula. 6/10
Right Where I Want You: nice love song, with a particularly warm vocal interpretation. 7/10
1976: OK, but nothing much to it. It’s not really evocative of the period. 6/10
When The Love Factor's High: pleasant. 6.5/10
Long Long Way: nice groove to this one, I liked it. 7/10
Sissy's Song: sweet, soft, touching song with excellent vocals. 7/10
I Still Like Bologna: formula again. 6/10
Never Loved Before (duet with Martina McBride): pretty good song. 7/10
Nothing Left To Do: more formula, 6/10
Listen To Your Senses: nice little song. 7/10
This Time: good song with a little more depth than some of the others on the record. 7/10
Laid Back 'n Low Key (Cay): Too much like Kenny Chesney for me to like this much. 6/10
If You Want To Make Me Happy: At last! The one great song on the record. If only the whole record had been like this. 9/10
If Jesus Walked The World Today: not sure about this. I’ll give it 7/10.
So overall this was a disappointment for me, but with one great moment in If You Want To Make Me Happy. T would have been much better with all the formula songs removed. If I add up just the 10 best songs this gets a score of 73/100, which is better than the Alison Krauss-produced Like Red On A Rose two years ago, which was plain dreary; and better than the fairly early A Lot About Livin’ And A Little ‘Bout Love, which also had some poor songs on it, but otherwise I prefer all his previous records to this.

Review: Ashton Shepherd, Sounds So Good

Ashton Shepherd is the latest singer to be touted as the saviour of traditional country music, and her Sounds So Good has just been released. She writes all but one of the songs, occasionally with her brother in law Adam Cunningham, who contributes the final song solo. Is it worthy of the hype?

She has a good voice with an interesting mixture of sweetness and character, and a very strong rural Alabama accent. The production is great (as you’d expect from Buddy Cannon), with some lovely playing. What about the songs?

Takin’ Off This Pain: the first single, a good song I like more. 8/10

Sounds So Good: Nice song about country life. 7/10

Lost In You: a little boring. 6/10

I Ain’t Dead Yet: great song about growing up, one of the hardest country songs on the radio. 8/10

Not Right Now: good singalong type song about country life and music. 7/10

Old Memory: great sad song about a lost love which has a very intense feel. 9/10

The Pickin’ Shed: cheerful song about making music in one’s backyard. 7/10

Regular Joe: very good song about a conversation with an ex’s new girlfriend. 8.5/10

How Big Are Angel Wings. Where else but in country music do you get tear jerking songs about a dying child? This is a pretty good example. 7/10

The Bigger The Heart. Liked this one, about tough guys falling in love. 7.5/10

Whiskey Won The Battle: this is the one Ashton didn’t write, and it’s a classic country song (payoff "your memroy won the war". 9/10

Discounting the weakest song, I give this 78/100. More than respectable, I definitely enjoyed it and will listen again, but perhaps not the classic I was hoping for
